Essentially, a summary distils the main arguments of a text or a paper and as the section says, reconstructs it for the reader. The section on summary of the same website further provides clues as to what a summary is. Two things stand out from this definition: that a summary is a condensed form of the main points of a text or an article and that a summary is meant to communicate your understanding of the text to the reader in your own words. But for those who aren't, I have chosen to quote a wonderful definition of summary as given by the Writing Center of Hunter College at the City University of New York. Many of you might be familiar with a summary. Before we understand how to go about writing a summary, it would be useful to be sure we know what a summary is. In this video, we will learn how to write a summary of the articles or essays that we read. This is an important skill in academic writing in general, as it allows you to incorporate scholarship around your research in a succinct manner. However, summarizing is not important only to be able to write a review of literature. A crucial aspect of writing a good review of literature is to be able to first summarize the texts that we are including in our review efficiently. It will also cover other writing genres that are relevant to you, including writing for popular media and policy briefs, allowing you to explain how the writing process differs in these areas. Through a mix of presentations and practice questions, this course provides you with a solid foundation for approaching the process of critical reading and writing in your respective disciplines. It also familiarizes you with the structure of academic writing, which will help you better grasp the process of reading academic articles and writing your research. This course focuses on the process of developing an argument through the examination of claims and evidence. With writing being an important method of thinking, you will learn how the practice of writing allows you to arrive at complex insights about your research area and develop your arguments systematically. In this course, you will learn to effectively communicate your research questions and findings to an interested audience using reading and writing skills. This course introduces you to critical reading and writing skills within the conventions of academic writing. Welcome to the Introduction to Academic Writing course!
